Spain's coach had until 31 October to decide whether to wait for Ale Galan's hand to heal or to move on. On 30 October he moved on: Javi Leal has been officially called up to replace Galan in the squad for the 2026 World Championships, which start on Monday in Doha. It is a late change to a team built around a left-side puzzle, and it hands a 23-year-old from Andalusia his first senior World Championship.
A late change for Juanjo Gutierrez
Galan, who hurt his hand, had already pulled out of the Kuwait Major a week earlier, and his place in Doha stayed in doubt until the replacement window was about to close. Coach Juanjo Gutierrez had first chosen Aimar Goñi to complete his group of left-side players, alongside Galan, Paquito Navarro and Coki Nieto. Leal missed that first list by a narrow margin. Momo Gonzalez was also considered for the vacancy, but the coach opted for Leal's attacking profile: a heavy smash and the ability to close points, qualities that can matter in Doha's fast conditions.
Who is Javi Leal
Leal plays on the left and reformed his partnership with Fran Guerrero in May 2026, after a difficult start to the year that included physical problems for his previous partner and several changes of pairing. Since then the results have come. On the Cupra FIP Tour he has won three Platinum titles, in Marseille, Oeiras and Lyon. On the Premier Padel circuit he reached his first final in Pretoria. On the way he beat Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia in the semifinals, and lost the title match to Galan and Federico Chingotto. He has added one semifinal in Valladolid and four quarterfinals this season, and he is still in the race for the Premier Padel Finals in Barcelona. Padelpedia's ranking has him at number 15. His record with Spain is already solid. He won the 2024 European Championship with the national team, partnering Alex Ruiz, and he was world junior champion in 2017 and 2019.
Spain's eight and the title it wants
With Leal in, Spain's eight reads: Navarro, Nieto, Goñi and Leal on the left; Coello, Juan Lebron, Mike Yanguas and Jon Sanz on the right. Galan was the biggest name of the left-side group, so the gap is real, and the pairings Gutierrez builds around it will be one of the questions of the week. The stakes are clear. Spain is chasing a fifth world title and lost the final to Argentina in both 2022 and 2024. Argentina arrives as the reigning champion with two consecutive world titles.
What comes next
The story is still developing, and the first matches in Doha will show how Spain lines up around the newcomer. For Leal, the call-up is a reward for a season in which he went from a difficult start to a Premier Padel final. For Spain, it is a reminder that a world title is won as much in the weeks before as on court.
