Argentina's men did not drop a single match against the Netherlands, and Spain's did not drop one against Paraguay. At the FIP Padel World Cup in Doha, day two ended with the favorites unbeaten and the group tables ready for a showdown: France against Argentina on Wednesday.
Every ticket to the quarterfinals is still on the table. With the group stage closing today, the World Cup results on the second day matter less for what they were than for what they leave open.
Argentina's men: Tapia gets a new partner
Argentina beat the Netherlands 3-0 in Group A. Tapia, the world number one, played with Libaak and won 6-4 and 6-2 over Richters and Roper. Stupaczuk and Arce beat Van Opstal and Prins 6-1 and 6-3, and Augsburger and Chingotto closed the tie with 6-3 and 6-4 against Nolten and Van Betuw.
France, meanwhile, beat Australia 3-0. That sets up the group's decisive tie, which FIP calls a blockbuster. The Dutch, who beat France on day one, still have Australia to face to secure their own place in the last eight.
Spain keep the lead, Chile survive a scare
Spain 3-0 Paraguay
Spain's men won every match in Group B. Yanguas and Leal won 6-4 and 6-3, Navarro and Lebron were ruthless with a 6-0 and 6-2, and Goñi partnered Coello to a 6-1 and 6-3 win. Sweden also won, against the United Arab Emirates, so Sweden and Paraguay are level on three points and meet on Wednesday with the quarterfinals at stake.
Chile 2-1 Qatar
The closest tie of the day was in Group C. Rashed and Mashari Nawaf gave Qatar the first point, 6-3 and 6-3, and Chile levelled when Valdes and Molina won 6-3 and 6-2. In the decider, the Qatari pair of Saadon and Waly won the first set 6-2 and had two match points in the second, but Chile came back to win the match and the tie. FIP wrote that it stayed undecided until the last point. Chile top the group, Germany are level with them, and Qatar are still alive, with Germany against Qatar on Wednesday.
The women: seven teams with two wins
In the women's draw, seven teams have won both their ties: Spain, Argentina, France, Italy, Sweden, Portugal and the Netherlands. Spain beat Great Britain 3-0, dropping three games in total: Ustero and Calvo won 6-0 and 6-0, Ortega and Bea Gonzalez 6-1 and 6-1, and Ari Sanchez with Paula Josemaria 6-0 and 6-1.
Argentina beat Belgium 3-0. Brea and Fassio won 6-0 and 6-0, and Osoro and Riera won 6-4 and 6-2. France beat Chile 3-0 in the same group, so the women's Argentina against France tie decides first place too. Germany beat Brazil and now dream of the quarterfinals, in what FIP calls the most closely contested group, the reigning world champions' own.
What Wednesday decides
According to FIP, all the men's ties on Wednesday are scheduled for 18:00, and the order of play for the women has not been detailed. The men's list reads like a bracket in itself: France against Argentina, Germany against Qatar, Chile against Portugal, Netherlands against Australia, Sweden against Paraguay, and Italy against Brazil on Court 6 for first place in Group D.
No team has confirmed a quarterfinal place yet. Two days in, the favorites have the cushion, and Wednesday is when the rest of the field gets to try to take it away.
