Spain against Argentina, twice in one afternoon, for the biggest title in national-team padel. The FIP World Cup in Doha ends today, Saturday 7 November, with both finals between the same two countries: the women at 12:00 in Spain and the men at 16:00 in Spain, at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Neither country has lost a knockout tie on the road to the final. Argentina's men are chasing a third straight world title, Spain's women have beaten Argentina in each of the last three finals, and the lineups will only be known when the order of play is published.
The women's final: Spain's streak against Argentina's hunger
The women's semifinals were one-sided. Spain beat France 2-0 and Argentina beat Italy 2-0, so the final is the rematch the draw promised.
Spain: two pairs, Josemaria and Triay dropped four games
Paula Josemaria and Gemma Triay won 6-3 and 6-1, and Claudia Fernandez and Bea Gonzalez followed with 6-0 and 6-0. Spain had already beaten Sweden 3-0 in the quarterfinal.
Argentina: the title it has not won since 2012
Aranzazu Osoro and Martina Fassio won 6-2 and 6-2, and Delfina Brea and Claudia Jensen won 6-2 and 6-3. Argentina swept Portugal 3-0 in the quarterfinal. According to Argentine press, the women have not won the world title since 2012, while Spain won the last three finals against them, all by 2-0. Osoro summed up the mood: “We could be on the Moon and our fans would be there”.
The men's final: the Argentine dynasty against a rebuilt Spain
Argentina are the defending champions and won the last two editions, including the 2024 final against Spain, decided 2-1. This time Spain arrive without Ale Galan, who was ruled out by injury, but with a squad that has won every knockout tie.
Argentina's road
Argentina won all three group ties, beat Germany 3-0 in the quarterfinal and then Italy 2-0. Leo Augsburger and Martin Di Nenno won 6-1 and 6-1 in about 50 minutes, and Agustin Tapia and Fede Chingotto won 6-3 and 6-2.
Spain's road
Spain beat Brazil in the quarterfinal and then Portugal 2-0, but the semifinal was tighter. Mike Yanguas and Aimar Goni lost the first set and came back to win 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2 against the Deus brothers in 1 hour 38 minutes. Then Juan Lebron and Paquito Navarro won 6-2 and 6-4.
What to watch for
A national-team final is a strange duel for the fans: Arturo Coello and Tapia are partners on the Premier Padel circuit, and Lebron and Augsburger are everyday rivals. Press previews already point to Coello against Tapia and Lebron against Augsburger as the matchups to look for, but no pairing is confirmed.
The tie is best of three matches, so a third match, if needed, would start around 20:00 in Spain, according to Movistar Plus+ programming that is only indicative. Argentina have the record, but Yanguas and Goni just showed Spain can win from a set down, and one match can tilt the afternoon.
Time and where to watch
The women's final starts at 12:00 in Spain (14:00 in Doha, 08:00 in Argentina). The men's final follows at 16:00 in Spain (18:00 in Doha, 12:00 in Argentina) on the central court. Italy and Portugal play the men's third-place match at 09:30 in Spain.
In Spain and Andorra the finals are on Movistar Plus+. Elsewhere the FIP World Cup is shown on Red Bull TV and the FIP YouTube channel in territories without a local broadcaster, with beIN Sports, ESPN, SuperTennis and Sport TV covering their regions.
By tonight, two countries will share the trophies or one will keep them both. After a week of one-sided ties, the final matches are the first with real doubt.
