Spain and Argentina open the World Cup with 3-0 wins as the Netherlands stun France in Doha

Padel World Cup results from Doha: Spain and Argentina win 3-0, Coello and Navarro beat Sweden 6-3 6-2 and the Netherlands stun France. Full day 1 report.

Spain and Argentina did what favorites are supposed to do. Both won their opening ties 3-0 at the FIP Padel World Cup in Doha on Monday, and the only real scare of the day came from a team that is not a favorite at all. The Netherlands beat France 2-1 in Argentina's group.

The results are early, with every team playing three group ties in three days, but they already shape the table: the top two of each group reach the quarterfinals on Thursday 5 November.

Spain's men: one tie-break away from a clean sheet

Spain beat Sweden 3-0 in Group B. Coello, the world number one, played with Navarro and won 6-3 and 6-2 over Vasquez and Windahl. It is a pairing made for this event, since Coello's usual partner plays for Argentina.

Lebron and Sanz, and a long night for Yanguas

Lebron and Sanz beat Olsson and Frost 6-0 and 6-2. The third match was the tight one: Yanguas and Goñi won 6-7, 7-5 and 6-2, losing the first set in a tie-break before taking control. In a format where one tie is three matches, that is the kind of match that can matter later.

Argentina answers, and the Netherlands crash the party

Argentina's men beat Australia 3-0 in Group A, on Court 5. Stupaczuk and Chingotto won 6-1 and 6-1, Augsburger and Di Nenno did not drop a game according to FIP, and Alfonso and Arce added a 6-1 and 6-0 win. The three pairs named in the report do not include Tapia, the other half of the year-end number one pairing.

The more interesting result in the group came a few courts away. The Netherlands beat France 2-1: Richters and Roper won 6-1 and 7-5, France levelled with a three-set win for Joris and Bergeron, and Van Opstal and Prins decided the tie with 6-4, 1-6 and 6-3. Argentina's group now has a Dutch team with a win in hand, and FIP notes that the gap between national teams is narrowing.

The women: Spain drop two games in six sets

The reigning champions opened against Germany and won 3-0. Claudia Fernandez and Bea Gonzalez won 6-0 and 6-1, Paula Josemaria and Martina Calvo 6-1 and 6-0, and Triay with Marta Ortega 6-0 and 6-0. Across the three matches, Germany won two games.

Argentina's women also won 3-0, against Chile in Group B. Virginia Riera and Julieta Bidahorria won 6-0 and 6-1, and Claudia Jensen played with Martina Fassio in a 6-2 and 6-0 win. The closest women's tie was France against Belgium, which the French took 2-1 after Godallier and Mansart won 6-1 and 6-2 in the deciding match.

What comes next

Group play continues today, Tuesday, with the same format: best of three matches, women in the afternoon and men in the evening in Doha. Spain's men still have Paraguay, who beat the United Arab Emirates 3-0, and the Emirates to play, while Argentina's men have France and the Netherlands left in Group A. We could not confirm the day-two order of play, so check the FIP site.

To watch, Movistar has the rights in Spain and Andorra, Red Bull TV streams the event globally where it is available, and FIP's YouTube channel covers the rest. One day in, the favorites are where they should be. The question is who can make them play a third set.
