Spain are still the women's world champions. In Doha on Saturday 7 November, the holders beat Argentina 2-0 in the final of the FIP World Cup, and the tie turned on the match everyone had circled: Paula Josemaria and Gemma Triay against Delfi Brea and Claudia Jensen, won 6-2, 6-7 and 6-3.
It was a repeat of the 2024 final, and for two of the players it meant facing their own partner. Triay and Brea are the pair that tops the world ranking on tour; in the national colours they stood on opposite sides of the net.
Sanchez and Ustero set the tone
Spain opened the final with the pair that had just won the Kuwait Major. Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero beat Aranzazu Osoro and Martina Fassio 6-3 and 6-3, a controlled win that left Argentina needing the second match to stay in the tie.
Sanchez is the world number three on the site's women's ranking and Ustero the seventh. Osoro and Fassio, ranked 17th and 25th, are the lower-ranked pair on paper, and the result followed the ranking.
Josemaria and Triay against Brea and Jensen
The second match decided the final. Josemaria and Triay won the first set 6-2. Argentina answered in the second: after Brea was moved to the left side, the set went to a tie-break and Brea and Jensen took it, 7-6, which forced a third set.
That set belonged to Spain, 6-3. It closed the tie at 2-0, so the third match, Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez against Virginia Riera and Julieta Bidahorria, was not played. The tie-break was the only set the final took from Spain.
The road to the repeat
Both finalists reached the last day without dropping a set in the tournament, according to the semifinal reports. In the quarterfinals Spain had swept Sweden 3-0 and Argentina had swept Portugal 3-0, with Brea and Jensen winning 6-0 and 6-0 in that tie.
Spain 2-0 France
Triay came back after resting in the quarterfinals and, with Josemaria, beat Godallier and Mansart 6-3 and 6-1. Fernandez and Gonzalez then won 6-0 and 6-0.
Argentina 2-0 Italy
Osoro and Fassio won 6-2 and 6-2, and Brea and Jensen added 6-2 and 6-3 to book the rematch with Spain.
A rivalry that keeps the same shape
Spain and Argentina also met in the 2024 final in Doha, and Spain won that one too, for what beIN Sports described as a sixth consecutive women's world title. Two years later the order has not changed: the same two countries reached the last day, and Spain again left with the trophy.
The difference this time was how close the key match came to tipping. Brea and Jensen took a set from Josemaria and Triay, and only a third set settled it. For Argentina, whose women again finished as runners-up, it is a second consecutive final lost in Doha. For Spain, it is another title built on depth: Sanchez, Ustero, Josemaria, Triay, Gonzalez and Fernandez all featured in the final week.
Triay's 59 and what comes next
The title comes days after Triay became the most decorated player in the sport's history with 59 titles at the Kuwait Major. Winning the national team's world crown against her own tour partner adds a different kind of trophy to that count.
The men's final, Spain against Argentina as well, was set to start at 16:00 in Spain on the same day, with Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia on opposite sides again. Padelpedia will follow it.
